BNA SATELITE CONCOURSE

To support the rapidly expanding Nashville airport, the Satellite Concourse started as a temporary facility intended to provide quick capacity for the airport as they expanded or replaced their existing facilities but evolved during the project to service as a permanent addition for further gate capacity. The eight gate Satellite Concourse displaced several underutilized taxiways for a remote facility serving Spirit and Allegiant airlines. Paired with the Satellite Concourse was a shuttle station designed to fit within a single narrow-body aircraft gate on Concourse C. This station served as the transfer point for arriving and departing passengers boarding the electric Cobus shuttles which looped the Concourse in continuous service. To facilitate a smoother passenger experience from shuttle to gate, the Satellite Concourse introduces a precast ramp, which allows the Cobus shuttles to drive up to an elevated curbside on the concourse level. This design solution reduced total building area by eliminated the space consumed by for vertical circulation cores on both ramp and concourse levels. It also alleviated the initial capital and ongoing operational maintenance costs for the escalators and elevators.
